Research Goal

We aim to cultivate human resources for establishing service design models and solving local social problems. We aim to train service designer in the five competencies of:

Research Field
Service Design for Social Innovation (SDSI)

Various social innovations have been spreading over the past decade, and it can be seen that the regional innovation model through non-profit organizations and community networks is more productive and sustainable compared to government and corporate-led social structures.
In other words, a social innovation model is spreading amidst the complexity of society. It is a bottom-up approach led by citizens and local communities that builds on service design methods and models for solving various community problems using creative thinking.

In addition, in accordance with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Act (Act No. 16047, 2018. 12. 24), it contributes to enhancing national and regional identity and dignity and increasing the people's cultural enjoyment by determining necessary matters for improving cultural publicity and aesthetics.

In general, the main items in establishing a public design promotion plan are :
  • Social Problem Solving Design
    Population change
Design responding to changes in demographic structure such as aging, low birthrate, and multicultural families
    Elimination of discrimination
Design to resolve social discrimination such as gender, race, and disability
    Safety and relief
Design that provides safety and psychological relief from crime, disaster, accident, etc.
    Mental and physical health
Design that promotes health and emotional stability from alienation, isolation, and stress
    Life improvement
Design to improve the quality of living environment, such as public hygiene, floor noise, and cognitive environment improvement
    Administrative convenience
Design for convenience and service improvement in public administration
    System improvement
Design to complement social welfare systems and systems
Other designs in fields deemed necessary by the head of the local government
  • CPTED Design
    Information media
Design of information media such as signage and images to help prevent crime and evacuation from disasters
Facility design for nature monitoring, access control, and regional enhancement
Space design of safe pedestrian paths and safety bases
Comprehensive life safety design at the regional level
Develop and operate continuous programs to strengthen local safety and community
  • Universal Design
    Information media
Design of various information media without discrimination in information accessibility and wayfinding
Facility design reflecting various citizens' behavior and convenience and safety in use
Space design with accessibility, mobility connection and convenience for various citizens
Comprehensive universal design at the regional level
Programs such as education, experience, and cultural events to improve and spread universal design awareness
Product Service System (PSS)

As the industrial paradigm shifts from the manufacturing to the service industry, the future of manufacturing lies in the business model transformation of “servitization”. Accordingly, Dongseo University studies various models and methods for product to service, service to product, and service to service transformations.

Research field :
1. Result Services

Result services aim to reduce the material intensity of existing systems by selling a‘Result’ instead of a product.

Example :
Selling a ‘clean clothes’ service rather than a washing machine.
result services
2. Shared Utilization Services

Shared utilisation aims to increase utilisation of physical products by sharing them.

Example :
Sharing facilities in a Laundromat instead of having washing machines in individual households.
result services
3. Product-life Extension Services

Product-life extension aims to increase the useful life of products through maintenance, repair, reuse and recycling.

Example :
Renting, maintaining, and upgrading washing machines, and recycling them at the end of their life.
result services
4. Demand Side Management Service

Demand side management aims to reduce consumer demand rather than building more generating capacity by working out the least-cost method of supplying demand.

Example :
Supplying energy efficient washing machines or powering them with renewable energy.
